User Experience Design

When I was studying for my Computer Science degree, a university professor once told me:

"You're an accomplished programmer, but eventually you're going to have to decide where you want your career to go. Many go on to make a good living implementing software efficiently, but there are also some who work on new ways of solving problems by applying a more analytical approach".

Making a good living from writing code sounded pretty good to me. After all I'd been programming ever since I started tinkering with BBC Micros as a child of the 80s. But the longer I have worked in the field, the more I have seen the important role design plays in building better solutions.

Working closely with customers and seeing people out in the field using apps I've worked on in a complex real-world context clearly exposed the strengths and weaknesses of the app designs.

In 2023 I enrolled in a course in UX design, working my way towards a Level 6 qualification. I've been studying and practicing as much as I can to help me understand the processes of designing and building user-centered products and services.

Here is where you will find more of my UX work over time. You can also checkout my blog, where I sometimes write about design.
